Brooklyn Duplex Transformed with Budget-Conscious Design
New York studio Plan Plan has executed a remarkable renovation of a compact duplex in Brooklyn, known as the CC Residence, proving that creative design solutions can lead to functional and adaptable homes even when working with a constrained budget.
The project, undertaken for a family with a child, focused on maximizing storage and reorganizing the layout to better suit their needs. The design philosophy centered on concentrating resources where they would have the most significant impact on spatial transformation, rather than spreading a modest budget thinly across all areas. This approach meant retaining existing elements like flooring, bathrooms, and plumbing, while introducing new components crafted primarily from stained birch plywood and stainless steel.
The upper level of the duplex now features an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, with custom plywood cabinetry and a peninsula enhancing functionality. A unique shelving unit, also made of plywood, cleverly delineates the sitting area from a raised home office nook. Downstairs, the bedrooms are laid out around a grid of Ryukyu tatami mats, which not only informed the dimensions of the rooms and carpentry but also added warmth and comfort underfoot. The studio's work on the CC Residence exemplifies how a budget-conscious yet thoughtful design can create livable and comfortable urban environments.
The CC Residence stands as a testament to ingenuity and resourceful design, showcasing that aesthetic appeal and functionality are not exclusive to high-budget projects. It inspires us to view limitations not as obstacles, but as opportunities for innovative problem-solving, ultimately leading to harmonious and inspiring living spaces.
