Chapel Residence: A Sanctuary of Modern Spirituality in Hong Kong

NC Design & Architecture (NCDA) meticulously redesigned a family residence in Hong Kong, integrating natural shapes with contemporary interpretations of sacred symbolism to create a unique living space.

This expansive 418-square-meter home, known as Chapel Residence, is situated in the affluent Mid-Levels district and was tailored for a Christian family. The six-story property features diverse living areas, a kitchen, dining spaces, three en-suite bedrooms, two additional bathrooms, and a top-floor entertainment room. Nelson Chow, NCDA's founder, emphasized that the design drew inspiration from religious architecture, aiming to translate Christian spirituality into a modern family home that encourages contemplation and interaction without being overly prescriptive. This three-year collaborative project saw the residents actively involved in shaping their serene domestic environment.

The interior of the Chapel Residence is envisioned as a sanctuary, employing natural elements like marble and travertine alongside pristine white plaster finishes to cultivate a tranquil and meditative atmosphere. The entrance hall, designed to evoke a domed ambulatory, features a circular arrangement of structural arches surrounding a central table and a cozy seating area, perfect for quiet reflection and scripture study. Connecting the lower levels are stacked, inverted apertures, reminiscent of European monastery cloisters. The kitchen, crafted from dark stone, incorporates an altar-like island made from Tinos marble, further reinforcing the religious undertones. Sculptural accents, such as a fabric-inspired wall with an integrated fireplace and an egg-shaped ceiling fixture, punctuate the minimalist color scheme. The dining room on the second floor boasts a custom-made travertine table paired with Patricia Urquiola's iconic Dudet chairs, illuminated by a sculptural cross positioned above, reinforcing the subtle spiritual theme throughout the home. Bedrooms also feature similar arch motifs and marble accents, maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. The main bathroom showcases bespoke Calcutta marble fixtures, including a bathtub and sink, adorned with handcrafted metal details by local artisans. Cream bouclé furnishings in the master bedroom complement the dining chairs and the neutral palette, providing a picturesque frame for the sprawling hill-top views.

The Chapel Residence stands as a testament to the harmonious blending of modern architectural principles with spiritual essence, illustrating how thoughtful design can elevate everyday living into an experience of serenity and contemplation. This project exemplifies a positive approach to integrating deeply personal beliefs into the fabric of a home, fostering an environment that nurtures family bonds and individual reflection.
