From Bleak to Chic: A Palm Beach Home's Edgy Transformation

Revitalizing History: An Elegant Edge for a Palm Beach Icon

The Initial State: A Blank Canvas with Unforeseen Challenges

Upon his first encounter with the Palm Beach property, designer Alex Alonso found a home dominated by stark white surfaces, an inheritance from previous owners who ran a stone and marble business. While some stonework was commendable, the overall aesthetic was dreary and dated, culminating in an uninviting, pinkish-red bathroom that evoked an unfortunate comparison to a butcher's shop. This initial assessment revealed a significant design hurdle.

Embracing a Bold Transformation: From Renovation to Reinvention

Alonso initially attempted minor updates, but after nearly a year, it became clear that a superficial refresh wouldn't suffice. Both the designer and the client conceded that the current approach was failing, leading to the pivotal decision for a complete interior overhaul. Despite the added expense, this drastic step was deemed essential to achieve the desired transformation, honoring the home's unique heritage.

A Home with a Storied Past: Honoring Orville Bulman's Legacy

More than just a house, this 1965 structure was once the residence of acclaimed artist Orville Bulman, celebrated for his whimsical tropical scenes. Given its prestigious past, and connection to collectors like Marjorie Merriweather Post, the home demanded a design approach that transcended mere modernization. The renovation aimed to imbue the space with a sophisticated blend of its historical essence and contemporary luxury.

Defying Convention: A Playful Approach to Palm Beach Style

Breaking away from the predictable opulence often found in Palm Beach, Alonso embraced a more experimental design philosophy. He infused the interiors with playful furniture and unexpected elements, deliberately avoiding clichés such as excessive nautical motifs. The client, who had a background with a Moroccan Mediterranean aesthetic, enthusiastically supported this innovative vision.

Nature's Embrace: Integrating the Local Environment into Design

In the living room, Alonso introduced a trellis-like treillage on the tray ceiling, subtly nodding to Palm Beach aesthetics without overdoing it. A distinctive Gucci wallpaper featuring elegant herons adorned one wall, a tribute to the home's location on Audubon Causeway, named after the naturalist John James Audubon. These thoughtful details brought a touch of Florida's natural beauty indoors.

Curated Elegance: Vintage Finds and Luxurious Accents

The living space was further enhanced by meticulously chosen vintage pieces, including two Adrian Pearsall sofas from the 1970s, luxuriously reupholstered in Schumacher velvet. Overhead, two antique Palme crystal chandeliers by Josef Hoffman commanded attention, adding a layer of grandeur. Alonso's bold decision to install two chandeliers instead of one elevated the room's character, demonstrating a commitment to dramatic yet tasteful design.

Decadent Details: The Moody Allure of the Wine Room

The wine room was designed to exude a rich, atmospheric ambiance. A suede Scalamandré wallcovering on the ceiling mimicked the tactile sensation of leather, offering depth and texture without practical drawbacks. Even functional areas received special attention; the bathroom adjacent to the gym featured striking soft-pink marble, a strategic choice by the client to balance the masculine elements of the adjoining spaces.

Artful Refinements: Personalized Touches in the Guest Suite

In the guest suite overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, Alonso’s custom-designed scalloped bed introduced a dynamic and charming element against striped walls. The recurring bird motif, found in the Pierre Frey drapery fabric, further reinforced the home's connection to its natural surroundings. Through these carefully considered details, the revitalized residence now embodies a rare blend of wit and sophisticated elegance, setting a new standard in Palm Beach desig
