Maarten Baas' 'The People's Clock': A Collaborative Art Installation at Schiphol Airport

Maarten Baas, a Dutch designer, has unveiled an extraordinary timepiece named 'The People's Clock' at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. This innovative installation, created with the involvement of 1,000 volunteers, offers a fresh perspective on the concept of time, transforming it into a living, moving spectacle within the airport's bustling Lounge 1, catering to European travelers.

Building on his earlier work for the airport's Lounge 2, which featured a smaller clock where Baas himself drew the hands in real-time, 'The People's Clock' elevates this artistic endeavor by highlighting the power of collective action. Instead of a single individual, 1,000 participants meticulously coordinate their movements to form the clock's hour and minute hands, while a solitary figure continuously circles the perimeter to represent the second hand. This large-scale, twelve-hour performance, filmed in an airport hangar, primarily engaged airport staff, including security personnel, baggage handlers, and cleaners, underscoring the collective spirit that keeps the airport operational. Baas emphasized the immense collaborative effort involved, stating that he knew of no other artwork where so many individuals converged to 'literally become time.' To sustain engagement throughout the extensive filming, a range of activities, from yoga to workshops, were provided for the volunteers.

The finished artwork is showcased on four screens, strategically placed on a cube, offering millions of annual travelers a captivating and whimsical interpretation of time. This installation is part of Baas's ongoing 'Real Time' series, initiated in 2009, which aims to deconstruct the conventional understanding of measured time. The series playfully reinterprets the film industry term 'real time' – depicting events as they unfold naturally – to foster a deeper connection between the viewer and the concept of time's ceaseless flow. These artistic explorations, including works like 'Sweeper Clock' and 'Analog Digital Clock' previously exhibited at Milan Design Week, consistently challenge perceptions and celebrate the often-unseen human effort behind daily operations. 'The People's Clock' stands as a testament to this philosophy, not only as an artistic creation but also as a tribute to the dedicated individuals who are the heartbeat of Schiphol Airport.

This innovative art project by Maarten Baas beautifully illustrates the profound impact of human collaboration and the intricate beauty found in the passage of time. It encourages viewers to pause, reflect, and appreciate the collective effort that underpins our daily lives, transforming a mundane concept like timekeeping into an inspiring and unforgettable experience.
